Description: Cooperative Agreement Number P15AC00399 was entered into by and between the Department of the Interior, National Park Service (NPS), and Living Classrooms Foundation (LCF) for the purpose of building educational programming, resource stewardship and job training opportunities at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine and at Hampton National Historic Site. Under this task agreement, NPS and LCF will work cooperatively to develop a youth-based employment program at Fort McHenry NMHS and the Hampton National Historic Site. The living history program will take place in the school year and summer and on special event weekends. As part of the living history program, employees will dress in reproduction uniforms and clothing and take on the roles of the soldiers, sailors and citizens who defended the fort in 1814, as well as period appropriate to the stories being interpreted through the long history of Hampton NHS. This project’s main public purpose is to provide opportunities for youth employment in our national parks. Young people will have the opportunity to learn important stories in American history and work directly with the general public to increase awareness, knowledge and support for historic preservation and stewardship of Fort McHenry and other places important to our nation’s cultural and natural history. While employed young people gain “real world” experience in skills such as public speaking s, historical research, and important customer service skills. Young people are exposed to the variety of jobs available in the national park service and provided with mentorship and guidance on educational and career choices.
