The U.S. Mission in Iraq announces an open competition for eligible organizations to submit proposals to renovate and preserve the Synagogue of Ezekiel in Shush, which is located at the edge of the Nineveh Plain and within the administrative district of Akre, 121 km from Erbil. Shush is a significant historic place with the remains of multiple religious sites in close proximity to one another. One of those sites is the Synagogue of Ezekiel, which is located on a hill above Akre. This historical site once belonged to the Jews of Shush who were mainly descendants of the tribe of Benjamin and who had come to the area with the other exiles from Israel at the time of King Shalmaneser of Assyria. The duration of the project is 12 months, after which the site is expected to be ready for visitors and tourists. Subject to the availability of funds, the Embassy expects to award one award for up to $ 500,000.00 to the selected program implementer to carry out the Renovation of Synagogue of Ezekiel in Shush.
